Admission Requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Hold an Alberta non-probationary driver’s licence.
- It is strongly recommended for participants to complete a successful medical assessment through a physician or nurse practitioner prior to participating in the Class 1 training program. Medical forms are available at a registry

Program for Class 1 Driver Applicants
Alberta is leading the way in Class1 driver training and licensing with the new Class 1 Learning Pathway for commercial truck drivers. Effective April 1, 2025, the Class 1 Learning Pathway will replace the Class 1 Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) program. The new pathway offers a flexible, apprentice-style approach to support new drivers in their ongoing career development. Read more about how the Learning Pathway differs from MELT.
Entry Program
Fundamental classroom instruction providing the essential framework for commercial operation.
- 40.5 hours of classroom instruction
Core Learning Program
The comprehensive standard for professional Class 1 licensure.
Class: 4 hours
- In-yard training: 13 hours
- In-cab driving: 43 hours
- Air brakes training: 8 hours
Experience and Equivalency Program
Streamlined path for drivers with documented commercial experience or license.
Class: 3.5 hours
- n-yard: 8 hours
- In-cab: 28.5 hours
Skills Acquired at Completion
- Students will gain the skills required to obtain a commercial driver position within the transportation sector.
- Competent drivers need skills to operate the particular class of equipment to which they have been assigned. As well, be aware of hazards associated with the work they have been tasked with. They will be able to operate equipment in a manner that protects their personal safety and the safety of others in their workplace.
- General safety inspection and maintenance.
- Hours of service (Logbook), Map Reading, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Handling of Cargo, Trip Planning.
- Progressive shifting, clutch brakes, double-clutching, break-checks, road driving, safe turns and lane positioning, city and outside city driving, merging, Truck familiarization, under-hood inspection, pre-trip inspection on truck and trailer, post-trip inspection, coupling and uncoupling, backing, strategies for confined spaces.
- Vigilance Training (Operators and those working near equipment)
Already have commercial driving experience? You may qualify through the Class One training experience equivalency instead of the full pathway.
Assessment and Certification
After completing the program, students’ assessments are taken based on their theoretical understanding and driving proficiency. Graduates become eligible to take the Alberta Government’s Class 1-F (Farm-Restricted) knowledge and road tests. After successful completion of the course, you are allowed to legally operate farm vehicles within the limits of the provincial restrictions.
