As industry is rapidly evolving so does the truck driver training sector. Alberta leads the way in this sector by introducing a new standard in Class 1 commercial truck driver training and licensing called the Class 1 Learning Pathway. The Class 1 Learning Pathway replaces the Class 1 Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) program form April 1, 2025. The new Class 1 Learning Pathway enhances safety, skills, and career opportunities for commercial truck drivers.
The Class 1 Learning Pathway basically provides a modern version of an apprenticeship, carefully designed to give new drivers everything they need. It goes beyond the traditional mentality, reframing driver training as a continuous, structured journey from novice to seasoned professional. It’s a fundamental shift designed to produce not just licensed drivers, but competent, confident, and career-ready truckers.
Class 1 Learning Pathway Four Key Stages
Its a competency based framework which train drivers progressively.
Entry Program
- It includes the 40 hours of training of commercial driving, with a focus on developing foundational knowledge and skills essential for success.
- Driver can access the training online supported by a driver training school.
- Drivers can take the Class 1 knowledge test.
Core Learning Program
- The Core Learning program consists of 60 hours of hands-on training in the yard and in the truck, designed to boost real driving skills.
- You will also need to finish an additional 8-hour air brake training if you do not already have a Air brake Q endorsement.
- After finishing this stage, you can take the road test for a provincially restricted Class 1 licence, which allows you to start gaining valuable on-the-job experience within Alberta—much like an apprenticeship, as you continue developing your skills.
Competence Building Program
- It includes a 17 – 25 hours of one-on-one driving instruction based on on-road driving assessment. On successfully demonstrated improvement in the identified competencies, the provincial restriction will be removed resulting in mobility to operate as an interprovincial class 1 driver.
Advanced Driver Training Program
- After earning a Class 1 driver’s licence, drivers have the option to take extra training courses to build on their abilities. These advanced programs can focus on skills and knowledge tailored to the specific industry they work in or plan to join.
Benefits of Class 1 Learning Pathway
