Are you thinking about a career in trucking and unsure about which license to choose—Class 1 or Class 3? Don’t worry, many people face the same issue while taking this decision. Picking the right license matters for your career. Both licenses offer roles in transportation, but each has its own options, duties, and rules.
Wildrose Academy, based in Calgary, can help you understand your choices. We provide clear information to guide your decision. Here’s what sets Class 1 and Class 3 licenses apart.
Class 1
A Class 1 License lets you drive transport trucks in Canada. You can operate:
- Semi-trailer trucks
- Tractor-trailers (articulated trucks)
- Any vehicle that you can drive with a Class 3 License
With a Class 1 License, you can:
- Drive long-haul freight trucks across provinces
- Work in oil and gas, logistics, or freight
- Earn higher pay with more responsibility
- Take jobs that cross international borders (such as Canada–U.S. routes)
Requirements for Class 1 License
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have a valid Alberta driver’s license.
- Pass a medical exam.
Wildrose Academy offers Class 1 Driver Training in Calgary to prepare you for safe driving.
Class 3 License
A Class 3 License has more limits but still offers good opportunities. It lets you drive single vehicles with three or more axles—such as dump trucks or garbage trucks. This license is ideal for local or regional driving jobs and heavy vehicles without trailers.
With a Class 3 License you can drive the below listed vehicles:
- Dump trucks
- Cement trucks
- Fire trucks
- Garbage trucks
- Tow trucks
With a Class 3 License, you can:
- Work in construction, municipal services, or landscaping
- Drive vehicles mostly within city or region
- Build experience if you want to upgrade to Class 1 later
- Finish training in a shorter time
Requirements for Class 3 License
- Be at least 18 years old
- Pass a medical exam
- Hold a Class 5 non-GDL license
Class 3 training is less demanding than Class 1, which lets you start your career sooner.
Class 1 License vs. Class 3 License
| Criteria | Class 1 License | Class 3 License |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle Type | Tractor-trailers, semi-trucks | Dump trucks, tow trucks, cement trucks |
| Job Opportunities | Long-haul, freight, oil & gas | City driving, construction |
| Salary Potential | Higher with more roles | Moderate and steady |
| Training Duration | Longer | Shorter |
| Future Upgrades | Top class, no upgrade needed | Can upgrade to Class 1 later |
If you want a long-term career with roles outside your region or country, choose Class 1. If you want to start fast and stay closer to home, Class 3 is a good fit.
