About the Farm-Restricted Class 1 License
Alberta farmers now have access to a streamlined option for obtaining a Farm-Restricted Class 1 License. If you’re operating a semi-truck for your own farm-related business, this license gets you legally on the road without the time, cost, or complexity of the Class 1 Learning Pathway Program.
Effective April 1, 2025, this farm-restricted option is ideal for:
- Full-time or part-time farmers and ranchers
- Anyone hauling their own goods within Alberta
- Those not engaged in commercial transport services

Is actively and directly involved in farming activities within Alberta.

Person should have authority over the farm’s assets, either by owning them or through a rental agreement with the asset holder.

Makes the key management decisions for the farm and is responsible for its day-to-day operating costs.

Produces farm commodities valued at $10,000 or more each year, or between $5,000 and $9,999 per year if their primary other sources of income are Canada Pension Plan or Old Age Security benefits.

Applying fertilizers or agricultural chemicals (insecticides, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides) by ground or air for farm use.

Handling manure or compost—such as collecting, storing, transporting, applying, using, transferring, or disposing of these materials.
- Confirm eligibility
- Declare farmer exemption at registries and take a knowledge test.
- Pass a vision test and submit a medical assessment.

Complete application form for farm-restricted Class 1 driver’s licence.
- Pass a road test

The applicant must declare their eligibility for the farm restriction exemption.

All other requirements for obtaining a regular Class 1 driver’s licence must still be met.
- Farm-restricted Class 1 licence holders may only operate vehicles requiring a Class 1 licence:
- Within Alberta—use outside the province is not allowed.

While engaged in farm-related transportation, including return trips and picking up materials.
- The licence is subject to code “N”, meaning:
- The holder cannot operate vehicles that require a Class 2 (e.g., buses) or Class 4 (e.g., taxis, ambulances) licence unless they have completed the required additional knowledge and road tests, along with all other conditions specific to those classes.
