Alberta is leading the way in Class 1 driver training and licensing with the new Class 1 Learning Pathway for commercial truck drivers. Effective April 1, 2025, the Class 1 Learning Pathway was replaced with the Class 1 Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) program. The new Pathway Program offers a flexible, apprentice-style approach to support new drivers in their ongoing career development.

Students will gain the skills required to obtain a commercial driver position within the transportation sector.
Competent drivers need skills to operate the particular class of equipment to which they have been assigned. As well, be aware of hazards associated with the work they have been tasked with. They will be able to operate equipment in a manner that protects their personal safety and the safety of others in their workplace.
General safety inspection and maintenance.
Hours of service (Logbook), Map Reading, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Handling of Cargo, Trip Planning.
Progressive shifting, clutch brakes, double-clutching, break-checks, road driving, safe turns and lane positioning, city and outside city driving, merging, Truck familiarization, under-hood inspection, pre-trip inspection on truck and trailer, post-trip inspection, coupling and driving, backing, strategies for confined spaces.
