Admission Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.

  • Hold an Alberta non-probationary driver’s licence.

  • It is strongly recommended for participants to complete a successful medical assessment through a physician or nurse practitioner prior to participating in the Class 1 training program. Medical forms are available at a registry

PROGRAM FOR CLASS 1 DRIVER APPLICANTS

Alberta is leading the way in Class1 driver training and licensing with the new Class 1 Learning Pathway for commercial truck drivers. Effective April 1, 2025, the Class 1 Learning Pathway will replace the Class 1 Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) program. The new pathway offers a flexible, apprentice-style approach to support new drivers in their ongoing career development.

  • It includes the 40 hours of training of commercial driving, with a focus on developing foundational knowledge and skills essential for success.
  • Driver can access the training online supported by a driver training school.
  • It includes 60 hours training: Classroom 4 Hours, Yard Training 13 hours, In-vehicle training 43 hours.
  • An additional 8 hours air brake course if no Q endorsement on licence.

On completion of this training, the driver can take the road test to obtain a provincially restricted class 1 driver’s license.

  • It includes a 17 – 25 hours of one-on-one driving instruction based on on-road driving assessment.
  • On successfully demonstrated improvement in the identified competencies, the provincial restriction will be removed resulting in mobility to operate as an interprovincial class 1 driver.

After earning a Class 1 driver’s licence, drivers have the option to take extra training courses to build on their abilities. These advanced programs can focus on skills and knowledge tailored to the specific industry they work in or plan to join.

SKILLS ACQUIRED AT COMPLETION

  • Students will gain the skills required to obtain a commercial driver position within the transportation sector.
  • Competent drivers need skills to operate the particular class of equipment to which they have been assigned. As well, be aware of hazards associated with the work they have been tasked with. They will be able to operate equipment in a manner that protects their personal safety and the safety of others in their workplace.
  • General safety inspection and maintenance.
  • Hours of service (Logbook), Map Reading, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Handling of Cargo, Trip Planning.
  • Progressive shifting, clutch brakes, double-clutching, break-checks, road driving, safe turns and lane positioning, city and outside city driving, merging, Truck familiarization, under-hood inspection, pre-trip inspection on truck and trailer, post-trip inspection, coupling and uncoupling, backing, strategies for confined spaces.
  • Vigilance Training (Operators and those working near equipment)

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular attendance in all aspects of training is essential for success as skill development and safety requirements build progressively from day to day. Excused absences for any reason do not relieve a learner of the responsibility to complete course work required by the course outline and instructor.

EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS

Assessment of the student’s attendance, work ethic, professionalism, and the ability to work safely. Any additional individual attributes will be noted.

SAFETY

Failure to comply with safety standards as outlined by the instructor may result in withdrawal from the course
