Alberta is leading the way in Class1 driver training and licensing with the new Class 1 Learning Pathway for commercial truck drivers. Effective April 1, 2025, the Class 1 Learning Pathway will replace the Class 1 Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) program. The new pathway offers a flexible, apprentice-style approach to support new drivers in their ongoing career development.

Alberta farmers now have access to a streamlined option for obtaining a Farm-Restricted Class 1 License. If you’re operating a semi-truck for your own farm-related business, this license gets you legally on the road without the time, cost, or complexity of the Class 1 Learning Pathway Program.

The Alberta Government requires the operator of any vehicle equipped with air brakes to have an air brake “Q” endorsement on his or her driver’s licence. This includes commercial vehicles, as well as recreational vehicles. This course provides the knowledge and skills necessary for a driver to operate air brake systems safely and to be able to identify faults in these systems. Students learn how the system works, how to use it properly, and what happens when it is not working properly.

Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) was implemented on March 1, 2019 by the Government of Alberta to improve safety for everyone on the road by ensuring Class 1 (tractor-trailer) and Class 2 (bus) drivers receive adequate training before they are tested for a Class 1 or Class 2 driver’s license. Drivers who have held a Class 3 driver’s license with two (2) or more years of experience driving Class 3 commercial vehicles may be eligible to take the Experience and Equivalency Class 1 MELT Program.
